Purpose

The Radiation Safety Policy Statement sets out the role of the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee. The committee advises senior management and the Radiation Safety Officer on matters related to radiation safety. Their primary responsibility is the oversight of the Radiation Safety Program.

Policy

Consistent with the objectives of the University of Saskatchewan's Health and Safety Policy, the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC) is established under the authority of the President. The RSAC is authorized by the President to advise in the safe use of nuclear substances, radiation devices and prescribed equipment, make recommendations on policies, and approve procedures and guidelines. Further, the subcommittee of the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee, the Radiation Safety Protocol Approval Committee, is authorized to issue nuclear substance permits, as required under the Canadian Nuclear Safety Act.

In accordance with the university's Radiation Safety Code and on the recommendations of the Radiation Safety Advisory Committee, Safety Resources and the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) shall administer the Radiation Safety Program. Safety Resources has the authority to enforce university policies and regulatory standards. As such, Safety Resources and the RSO have the authority to stop all work and suspend any activity involving the use of radioactive sources or equipment that may pose a threat to the health and safety of an individual or that would violate the university's CNSC-issued license conditions or regulatory compliance.

Procedure

All individuals must adhere to the university's Radiation Safety Code of Practice for the acquisition, use, storage, transportation and disposal of nuclear substances, radiation devices and prescribed equipment.
